When toddlers look outside and see the inky blackness, they might well imagine that night is nothing but a dark, empty and scary place.
"While You Are Sleeping," is a very reassuring bedtime story which shows that night has a life of its own. Melinda Szymanik's poetic story and Greg's appealing colourful comic-style illustrations tell of stars shining, animals having their breakfast in the middle of the night, and trains, planes and trucks hurrying to their destinations. In the early morning, cows queue up in the milking shed to give milk and bakers rise to bake bread for breakfast.
By the end of the story the little boy is fast asleep in his bed with a contented smile on his face while his dog keeps watch on top of his blanket.
This is a New Zealand picture book. It includes pictures of possums, pukeko, a kiwi and plenty of cows, making it a great present to mail to a small grandchild overseas to give them a taste of home.
