Insurers are often asked: “If I put photos of my vacation on social media, then get burgled, will my insurance claim get rejected?” Usually, the answer will be no, but being mindful of what you put on social media is always a good idea. You want to protect yourself and minimise any chance of being burgled when you’re not home.
Basic tips to help protect yourself when you’re away
1. Check you privacy settings
By checking your privacy settings you can ensure only you’re friends and family can see (and share) your photos and posts. This stops any strangers discovering your house is empty.
2. Highlight your holiday – not your home
Look into ensuring there is no link between your ‘online’ presence and your home address. This way, if a stranger does see your post, they’ll can only get details of your trip and not your empty house.
3. Delay you posts
As fun as it is to share your trip online as it happens, consider posting about it after you arrive home. This helps reduce the risk of anyone taking advantage of an empty house, as you will already be home (just be sure to imply you are already home in your post)!
4. Keep things secure
Ensuring you’re home and contents is secured protects your insurance cover and gives you peace of mind when you’re away from home. Although it seems simple, it is important you:
- Ask a neighbour or friend to check-in on your house every now and then
- Turn on your alarm (where applicable) and lock all the windows and doors
- Set internal lights to a timer and ensure outdoor security lights are working
- Divert your mail or ask a friend to collect it and pause your newspaper subscription
5. Double check your cover
If you’re home is going to be vacant for a long period, you need to let your insurer know. They can check you’re still covered, and let you know what further measures you might need to do while you’re away.
Be mindful of what you share on Facebook, Instagram an other social media platforms. However, most of all, have fun on your break away! Leave the insurance worries to your insurer.
