The Big Boil-Up celebrates a Māori food tradition and the special role kai plays in bringing whānau together. Written by Angie Belcher, whose authentic storytelling captures the joy and humour of family life through rich language and playful rhyme, making it ideal for reading aloud at home or in group settings. Illustrated by Zak Ātea in vibrant, expressive artwork that brings the whānau’s boil-up feast to life.

About the Author

Angie Belcher is a writer and a teacher. Her love of outdoor adventure, including diving, caving, and hiking, provides Angie with exciting writing prospects and has become the catalyst for many children’s books. Most of her books, written for educational publishers, can be found in New Zealand schools, but her favourite stories originate from her home at Māketu in the Bay of Plenty. Angie’s previous book with Scholastic was Pipi Dance, illustrated by Lily Uivel.

Zak Ātea is a published Illustrator and Visual Artist originally from New Zealand, now based in Sydney, Australia. Her work includes editorial illustration, children’s book illustration, artist book design and fine art practices created through digital and traditional painting and drawing mediums. This is her first book with Scholastic.

    1. You must be a GrownUps member and subscribed to our newsletter to be eligible to enter.

    2. The competition closes on 3rd September 2025. Winners will be notified via email by 4th September 2025.

    3. It is your responsibility to provide a correct New Zealand postal address for prize delivery. GrownUps is not responsible for prizes sent to incorrect addresses.

    4. Winners will be drawn at random by the GrownUps administration team.

    5. GrownUps employees and their immediate families are not eligible to enter.

    6. By entering, you agree to GrownUps using your name on social media as a winner of the competition.

    7. One entry per household.

    8. The prize is non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash or other items.

    9. You must reside in New Zealand, as the prize can only be delivered within New Zealand.
