About Kai Stars of Matariki

Join Sam and Te Rerehua as they prepare a Matariki feast!

It’s the day before Matariki and a big feast has been prepared. Eeling took place months ago and Te Rerehua and Sam are excited to give thanks to Tupuānuku and Tupuārangi, the stars connected to food grown in and above the ground.

But, one night, those sneaky Patupaiarehe return and start eating the uncooked eels . . . can Sam and Te Rerehua come up with a plan to replace the kai?

A companion title to Miriama Kamo and Zak Waipara’s popular The Stolen Stars of Matariki and The Twin Stars of Matariki, this new story is also set in the wild and windy Te Mata Hāpuku (Birdlings Flat), in New Zealand’s South Island.

The te reo Māori edition, Ko ngā Whetū Kai o Matariki, ko Tupuānuku rāua ko Tupuārangi, is retold by Ariana Stevens.

Miriama Kamo is an award-winning journalist. She is the anchor of TVNZ’s flagship current affairs programme Sunday and Māori current affairs programme Marae. Miriama has worked on many of TVNZ’s key programmes including 1 News as a newsreader.

Miriama’s first children’s book with Scholastic was the first of this series, The Stolen Stars of Matariki. Her 2022 book with Rangi Matamua and Isobel Joy Te Aho-White, Matariki Around the World, was one of the bestselling children’s books of 2022.

Zak Waipara, a former NZ Herald graphic artist and HOD of Animation at Animation College, Zak Waipara (Rongowhakaata, Ngati Porou, Ngati Ruapani, Ngati Kahungunu) is now Digital Media lecturer at AUT.

He has worked as a designer for Māori Television’s children’s show Miharo, illustrated comics and a range of books, and created animated music videos. In addition to these books by Miriama Kamo, he is also the illustrator of Scholastic’s Horeta and the Waka and Īhaka and the Unexpected Visitor.
