Jason and Kath have 25 years of experience designing and managing home orchards in a diversity of environments across Aotearoa. The book focuses on creating a healthy setup and selecting well-suited varieties. From this solid foundation, fruit trees flourish, care is easy, there are fewer pests and diseases, and most importantly, growing is fun!
• Simple, practical, low-cost setup.
• Simple and effective method of planning the orchard layout, catering to the home grower. Plus, sample plans of orchards in different climates and both urban and lifestyle orchards.
• Covers the key basics of tree anatomy and the lifecycle of fruit trees so that people understand their trees.
• A detailed catalogue of deciduous, evergreen and subtropical fruits to help people choose the right types of fruit and varieties to suit their place.
• Helpful measures to support every decision – warmth, hardiness and chilling hours for choosing fruit trees, fertility measures for assessing soil health, measures to assess tree vigour and health.
This inspiring, accessible book is perfect for beginners setting up a new orchard, busy people who want homegrown fruit without the fuss, and seasoned growers seeking deeper knowledge.
‘A book for those who love growing their own fruit, want to learn how to do it or do it better. It covers it all, from where to start, what to look for, what is suitable for your area, how to prep, how to look after and train – you name it, it is in here. A must have, and a keeper.’ – Fiona Eadie, author of 100 Best Native Plants for New Zealand Gardens
‘I wish this book had been available when I started my fruit growing journey! I’ll be the book I recommend to people starting out – it’s highly engaging and exceptionally helpful. I can see worn edges from endlessly coming off the shelf to be consulted and re-read.’ – David Whyte, president Treecrops Association NZ
