Beloved New Zealand author Susan Brocker’s latest novel for children involves a crisis, a rescue and a daring pursuit.

A heart-wrenching and ultimately uplifting story about Sam, a 14-year-old girl from a struggling homeless family, who is already involved in petty crime. She must face her own fears and her sense of what is right, to defy a dangerous drug criminal, and rescue starving dogs and their pups from an inhumane backyard breeder.

This novel for children 10+ years is an insight into the life of the less fortunate and the cruelty of the puppy farming racket.

Susan Brocker’s love of animals is evident in this heart-warming story of how one girl can make a difference, and it is set in an urban landscape.

Susan Brocker has written over 50 fiction and non- fiction books for older children and teens, which have been published worldwide. She has a history degree and a love of social history that is reflected in her books. Susan also has a close affinity with animals. She lives with her husband and many pets in a lovely old villa on a small farm near Tauranga.

Her previous books with Scholastic include ICE, Pelorus Jack the Dolphin Guide, Mrs Chippy the Cat, Friday the Rebel Dog and Bess the Brave War Horse (a picture book series based on true NZ animal tales) and a middle-grade novel in the Kiwis at War series: 1914 Riding into War.
