About But Then…

The far-fetched, tall tale of why a library book is 293 days overdue!

“A seal came flying out of the water at us.
‘I like stories,’ she said, and snatched up the book in her jaws . . .”

A child and their grandfather are returning a book to the library. When the librarian points out it’s 293 days overdue, Grandad recounts an outrageous, funny and far-fetched story of why it took so long to get back to the returns desk. WARNING: a penguin, two seals, an owl, a whale and an albatross may have been involved!

Swapna Haddow, award-winning author of the Dave Pigeon and Bad Panda books, loves writing about boisterous animals and madcap adventures and this outrageously funny story will certainly stretch children’s imaginations!

Kids love tall stories, and this one will not disappoint. A delightful grandparent and child story. The colourful characters are brought to life by Daron Parton’s equally colourful, fun and quirky illustrations.

About the Author

Swapna Haddow grew up in the UK and wrote her first book at age eight. She wishes she’d kept it, but it seemed like a good idea at the time to trade it for two stickers and a couple of marbles! Her first published book was the award-winning junior novel Dave Pigeon, and her first picture book was My Dad Is a Grizzly Bear. She has also written the early reader Ballet Bunnies series as Swapna Reddy. Swapna now lives in Dunedin, with her husband, son and their dog. This is her first picture book with Scholastic New Zealand.

Daron Parton is an award-winning illustrator who was born in the UK, married a Kiwi and emigrated to New Zealand in 1995. He has worked as an illustrator for over 30 years and his books include the humorous Scholastic titles, We Saw a Spinosaurus, Starfish the Star,  Stupid Carrots and Bedtime is Boring. Daron has two sons and lives in Hamilton.+
