About Badjelly

A fresh new book based on the Badjelly the Witch story, created for the current generation of children and published in conjunction with the animated TV series airing on TVNZ and internationally

CroppedBadjelly the Witch, remember that name
For her legend is scary and definitely not tame
She’s a horridible villain who’s become quite reliant
On her cursed floating castle and her multi eyed giant.

She needs a boy and a girl in a soup to devour
In order to restore her failing witch power
For kids hold the secret to restoring her magic
And she’s willing to get them no matter how tragic

Joined by a worm as strong as a house
A goblin, a lion and a banana turned mouse
Tim and Rose are our heroes who will lead this brave gang
To take Badjelly out with a mighty great bang.

So read through this book, but keep up your guard
If you want to come out unscathed and unscarred
Watch out for a witch and her magic that flickers
Stinkypoo, stinkypoo, knickers knickers knickers!

In 1973, Spike Milligan wrote and illustrated Badjelly the Witch as a story he could tell his children. The story was soon turned into an audio play, starring Spike himself. A few years later, the story was released on LP by Polydor Records. The story has since gone on to become a successful play and is now a staple in pop culture history.

The new Badjelly delivers a fresh new take for today’s kids on this classic story, all the while preserving the crazy humour, bizarre situations and quirky characters from Milligan’s original tale that has entertained kids for generations.

The Adventure

For those unlucky few that don’t know the tale of Badjelly the Witch, this is a ripping yarn of two curious kids whose future is in the balance after their beloved cow is cow-napped. Will they be made into boy/girl soup to rehydrate the desiccated has-been, Badjelly? OR will they enlist the help of a paranoid sausage-hatted tree goblin, a rusty metal lion, an inhumanly strong worm and an ex-banana mouse to defeat evil and win a bonus giant?

The animated TV series features the voice of Harry Potter star Miriam Margolyes, and local talent includes Rhys Darby, Guy Montgomery, Ray O’Leary, Chris Parker,

Josh Thomson, Madeleine Sami and Jackie Van Beek.
