About A Trip Towards the Sunset
A debut novel of friendship, self-discovery and long forgotten dreams.
Cora is finally at peace. Living in beautiful Golden Bay, after years of feeling torn between her birthplace, Spain, and New Zealand, she has found the courage to follow her dreams. But then life issues a final blow, threatening to steal her happiness.
Relaxed and grounded, Cora’s best friend Irene has always been the perfect mother. But when her daughters grow up and leave home, Irene feels lost. Then she receives a letter from Cora with a life-changing request.
Cora’s sister Sofia lives a dull life in Madrid. A literature professor, she longs for something else. When Irene invites her on a trip of a lifetime, Sofia struggles to separate her anger towards her sister from her own need to spread her wings and find freedom.
A Trip Towards the Sunset, set against the stunning backdrops of New Zealand, Scotland, Spain and Germany, is a story of grief, love, the search for self-fulfillment, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship and sisterhood
Author Note
‘A Trip Towards the Sunset is a novel that covers three main topics. At its core, it’s a book about second chances and rediscovering who you are. Second, it’s a novel about motherhood and friendship, about the struggles of being a single mum and still taking care of your dreams while raising your children. Finally, it’s a journey across New Zealand, Scotland, Spain and Germany, and a nuanced look at an immigrant’s experience of feeling divided between one’s native country and where one lives, and of finding where home is.
As a Spanish woman who moved to New Zealand fourteen years ago, I drew on my experience of feeling divided between two different worlds (geographically, emotionally and culturally), and not knowing quite where I belonged, as well as raising a daughter as a single mum. This novel also allowed me to take readers on a road trip around places I love, in New Zealand and in Europe, places that are close to my heart.
Although no character is based on any real person, I have incorporated bits and pieces from myself and from people I know, based on conversations over the years of what it means to be a mum, to live somewhere far away from your home country, and of the dreams you have left behind, of how to recover them and find where home truly is.
And finally, the book is an ode to the wonderful strong women, some of whom I am proud to call my friends, who discover in their mid-life what they truly want and find the courage to follow their inner wisdom and reinvent themselves.’
