About Elephant Park
An ode to the beloved Elephant Park in this poignant story for children
Generations of children have played on the trusty elephant slide in the park. But now her tusks are broken, her paint is cracked and her bones are weary. Even her pink toenails have lost their shine. Children visiting the park run instead to the shiny new playground equipment.
But Elephant’s sad face captures the heart of one little boy, who invites her home with him. There, Noah discovers that his dad also played on the elephant slide as a boy! Together, they decide to give Ellie a makeover.
The author was inspired by a real elephant slide that sits in a playground in Bishopdale in Christchurch and has become an icon for the community since it was built in the late 1970s.
This is a poignant story that will tug on the heartstrings that is beautifully illustrated by one of NZ’s top children’s illustrators, Jenny Cooper, who captures the pathos and infuses the story with joy.
