For most people, retirement means settling down close to family, friends and loved ones. But for a select few adventurous souls, retirement is just another excuse to cure an insatiable case of wanderlust. From waking up in paradise to amazingly affordable healthcare, there’s so much to love about retiring overseas. If you’re flirting with the idea, this article is for you.
Thailand
With experts citing living costs at just over $2000 a month, Thailand offers incredible value for money when it comes to overseas retirement. If you love the buzz of big cities Bangkok can be a rewarding destination, though most expats tend to head north to laid-back Chiang Mai. If sun and sand are on your wish list look south to places like Hua Hin, a cosmopolitan resort offering beautiful beaches, upscale dining and a glut of golf courses. Affordable, world-class health care also wins Thailand big points for retired expats.
Malaysia
Southeast Asia offers a host of wonderfully affordable retirement destination, though very few perform as high as Malaysia when it comes to safety credentials. As well as a handful of modern cities the island nation boasts pristine rainforest, dreamy beaches and balmy weather. The country also makes it incredibly easy to retire thanks to the “Malaysia My Second Home” (MM2H) visa program. Escape to one of Malaysia’s tropical islands or live it up in Penang, a charismatic city known history, culture and an incredible food scene.
Mexico
In 2017 Mexico was crowned America’s favourite destination for expat retirement by International Living. The country lures retirees with a low cost of living, a vibrant local culture and a host of dynamic expat communities that will make you feel right at home. Of course, the downside to retiring in northern hemisphere destinations like Mexico is distance. While many Asian destinations are an easy hop, skip and a jump away, Mexico puts you over 10,000 kilometres from your friend and family groups in New Zealand.
Vanuatu
Dreaming of living out your days on a tropical island? Look no further than Vanuatu. You may recognise it as a staple on cruise ship itineraries but look a little deeper and this stunning slice of the South Pacific can be an incredibly rewarding place to put down some roots. Waterfront real estate is surprisingly affordable which means you could wake up to ocean views every day.
India
If you loved Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, chances are you’re daydreamed about retiring in India. From the dazzling beaches of Goa to the sheer spirituality of Rishikesh, India is truly a feast for the senses. Furthermore, a flourishing Ayurveda medicine scene makes it a top pick for foreign retirees in search of holistic healthcare. Plus, who doesn’t want to devour fragrant curries, fluffy naan and creamy mango lassies for the rest of their days?
