This winter, The Salvation Army is issuing an urgent call to Kiwis. Across Aotearoa New Zealand, more families than ever are facing the reality of homelessness, and for many, the question of where they will sleep each night is no longer certain.
The Salvation Army’s 2026 Winter Appeal, Hope for Homeless Families, shines a spotlight on a crisis both visible and hidden. Visible in the growing number of people coming through their doors for help. Hidden in the everyday reality of children sleeping in cars, families living in cold garages, and young people bedding down on couches, never quite sure where they will be next week.
Captain Andrew Wilson, Corps Officer at Wellington South, says what he is seeing on the frontline reflects a profound shift.
“Right now, too many families are living on the edge and falling over it,” he says. “We are seeing a surge in families who never thought they would need help, now facing the heartbreak of not knowing where they will sleep next.”
As the cost of living continues to rise, the gap between income and essential costs is widening. Rent, food, power and transport are no longer manageable for many households. For parents, the pressure is relentless.
“Parents are being forced to make devastating choices,” Andrew says. “Do I pay the rent or do I feed my kids? Do I try to heat the house or keep a roof over our heads? These are not choices anyone should have to make, but for many families, there is simply no good option left.”
Behind these decisions are real stories. A mother trying to keep her children warm in a damp garage with no insulation. A father sleeping in his car so his children can stay temporarily with relatives. Teenagers sharing overcrowded rooms where there is little space to rest, study or simply be children.
This is the reality of homelessness in Aotearoa New Zealand today. It is not always rough sleeping on the streets. More often, it is hidden. It is unstable, unsafe and exhausting.
At The Salvation Army, they see the human toll of this every day. Families arrive overwhelmed and worn down, carrying not just financial stress but emotional exhaustion. Many feel ashamed to ask for help. Many have tried everything before walking through their doors.
The Salvation Army frontline teams are there to meet people in that moment. With practical support, yes, but also with care, dignity and a commitment to walk alongside them.
Funds raised through the Winter Appeal go directly towards this work. Your gift could help provide food support for a family settling into a new home. It could support a financial mentoring session for someone in a crisis. Or it could even help provide emotional care and support so a family can begin to regain stability and rebuild their lives.
But this appeal is about more than meeting immediate need. It is about restoring hope.
“People are not just reaching out for help,” Andrew says. “They are reaching out for hope, for a sense that things can get better. No child should have to face the winter in the cold, hungry, or without a safe place to sleep. Yet that is still the reality for far too many.”
Every day, Salvation Army teams across the country show up for people in crisis. They listen without judgement. They offer practical advice. They walk alongside families as they take the first steps toward a more stable future.
“We see the human cost of this crisis in every community,” Andrew says. “Our role is to stand with people when life becomes overwhelming and to help them find a path forward.”
This winter, The Salvation Army are asking New Zealanders to stand with them.
