It’s Friday, and later in the day, many of us will partake of a glass or two of something to celebrate the end of another week (or a day with a ‘y’ in it!). Wine o’clock has always been an affectionate term for that lovely hour when you can slow down, let responsibility slide a little and have a laugh with friends or colleagues.
However, researchers have found that there is actually a definitive ‘wine o’clock’ – and that’s a Friday at 6.30pm!
More than two million pieces of data were collected on behalf of the wine industry through an app, and the time wine drinking peaked in countries around the world was analysed by US firm Enolytics.
The findings showed that people tend to start drinking earlier than 6.30, often around 4.45pm, but also that the majority of wine consumption concludes by 9pm, with the peak between 6.00 and 6.30.
When it comes to days of the week, the weekend is still the favourite for a tipple – Friday and Saturday are still the most popular days to imbibe, followed by Sunday night.
Of course, it’s easy to find an excuse to shift wine o’clock to suit our own lives (there’s always time for a glass of wine!), but wine o’clock itself is classified as, “the window of time during which wine consumers are most frequently engaging with, and most interested in, wine.”
So, set your clocks – cheers!
