Spare a thought for your pets tonight – Guy Fawkes night can be seriously distressing for animals – they are easily startled by loud noises and bright flashes of fireworks. Already this week, Facebook has has many posts about animals going missing as they run to avoid fireworks which have been set off early.
If you have pets, please take extra care of them tonight, and over the next few nights. The SPCA advises the following:
- Stay home with your pet if you can – they’ll be less stressed with someone they trust close by.
- Keep them inside where they won’t see the flashes and the bangs will be muffled. Close doors and windows and draw the curtains.
- Ensure your pet is named (put a collar/registration tag on them) – if your pet does get out, then panics and bolts, it will help rescuers reunite you.
- Move horses and farm animals away from fireworks – and make sure all fences are secure and stable horses where possible.
- Take special care of elderly or unwell pets – consult your vet for the best advice on keeping them calm
