Spruce up your home for the holidays

If you’re a grandparent, or a favorite aunt or uncle, with the holidays fast approaching, you’ll want to spruce your home up, making it inviting and comfortable for all your loved ones. And while you may not be in your 30s, and the preparations might be going a bit slower, there are a few things you can do to ensure a pleasant family gathering this holiday season.

Prioritise your kitchen as the place where much of the action will take place.  Sinks and waste disposal units are easily blocked with fats and bones at this time of year. However, as you may already know, when dealing with blockage, prevention is better than cure. Make sure your fridge can take the strain and prepare your cooker for what lies ahead, so that you can have everything in order for when your guests arrive.

The Fridge

Now’s not the time to give the fridge an in-depth clean. Save that for when the grandkids have emptied it. Take a trip down memory lane to a time when chemical cleaners were not so common and Mix up a solution of baking soda and vinegar or lemon and give the shelves and handles a quick wipe. Your main goal with the fridge is to make sure you’ve used up anything that needs to be eaten before you get ready to fill it. Also, spend a little time rearranging it. There is nothing worse than a jam-packed fridge in which you can’t find a thing.

The Cooker

You can use the same solution to give your hob a quick clean. If your oven is dirty it may be worth taking the opportunity to clean it now. It will see a lot of use during the holiday season and you will only be adding to the grease already there.

The Sink

Your sink is probably the hardest working and most neglected area of the kitchen. The baking soda solution will work well for bringing it up with a shine. Used down the plughole it will help shift any grease etc already built up. The last thing you need during the holidays is a blocked sink, or a broken waste disposal unit. That is why it is important to know what you shouldn’t place in your garbage disposal. It might be worth putting up a note to remind your folks what can and can’t be disposed in it, like raw meat or coffee grounds.

Sprucing up your home in time for your family arriving need not be too arduous. The key is to focus on the high traffic areas like your kitchen using as few chemicals as possible. Leaving you free to enjoy the holiday season with your relatives.
