This month is the second part covering new rose releases for winter 2018. Keep an eye out for these and if you can’t find a source, email me (hayden@nzroses.org.nz) and I’ll do my best to point you in the right direction.
My Dad: A stunning new rose bred by Bob Matthews from his gorgeous ‘My Mum’. Clusters of fragrant yellow flowers cover this floribunda, putting on a wonderful display. Quintessential: A Gold Star winning rose from the New Zealand Rose Society Trials in Palmerston North, this rose has masses of medium pink blooms with a lighter reverse. Poppy: A great display of true red medium sized blooms are a feature of this rose named as a tribute to Poppy Diack of Diacks Nurseries in Invercargill. Powerpuff: From Kordes of Germany who are known for breeding roses with exceptional health, comes this shrublet which covers itself in small soft pink blooms. Grows to one metre high with a spreading habit. Available from resellers of Matthews Nurseries or www.rosesnz.co.nz.

The Lady Gardener: New from David Austin, this variety features large, full petalled rich apricot blooms with a strong tea rose scent. Quick to repeat bloom and very healthy. Available from Tasman Bay Roses www.tbr.co.nz.
Thomas A Beckett: This new David Austin variety has informal rosette blooms of light red with a strong old rose fragrance to match. A shrubby grower of medium height and good health, it repeats blooms quickly. Available from Tasman Bay Roses www.tbr.co.nz.
Vintage Miss: A stunning new rose bred by Bob Matthews with clusters of cupped rich pink blooms, lightly scented. Good repeat of blooms and grows to 1.1 metres high. Available from resellers of Matthews Nurseries or www.rosesnz.co.nz.
Wedding Celebration: Everyone loves a red rose and will love this well named variety from Poulsens of Denmark. The deep rich red blooms are produced on single stems so great for picking. A taller grower with dark green foliage. Available from resellers of Rasmussen’s Nurseries.
Wonderland: A striking variety with rich magenta purple blooms changing to hot pink in summer. A bushy medium growing plant to 1.2 metres high. Available from resellers of Matthews Nurseries or www.rosesnz.co.nz.
Wonder® Sweet Marzipan: A confection of buff, apricot, peach, with highlights of yellow and cream, so difficult to describe. Moderately scented. Upright growing bush with mid-green semi-glossy disease tolerant foliage. Available from Amore Roses www.amoreroses.co.nz
In the rose garden for June:
- New seasons roses are store now, get in early to get the new and popular varieties before they sell out.
- Plant new roses. Keep them moist before and after planting as dehydration is a leading cause of plant failure.
- Continue to tidy up around the roses remove fallen leaves and debris and put in the rubbish. Do not compost.
- For many areas, it is still a bit early to prune. You can however remove any dead or diseased wood early before the main pruning time arrives.
- Check your secateurs are sharp before pruning and that other equipment like pruning saws and loppers are in good working order. A small wire brush is also useful for brushing the bud unions to encourage new growth.
