Glorious Grandparents

As grandparents, we know how fantastic it is to be able to enjoy a whole new generation in our family, with the benefit of wisdom, hindsight, time and humour.

Many adult children comment that their parents are far different with their grandchildren than they were  with their children – more patient, more lenient and more present.

Seeing our children grow up to have children of their own is one of life’s great privileges. As William Wordsworth so eloquently put it,“The Child is father of the Man.”

Grandparents are more involved in their families than ever, so let’s take a look at some of the best qualities they possess and contribute.

Patience – parents often have to hurry and hustle – grandparents tend to be full of patience – they give the gift of time. Even when grandchildren are boisterous or challenging, the best grandparents know that it’s all part of growing up.

Generosity – this comes in many forms, the aforementioned time, but also hospitality, advice (where appropriate) and also in terms of occasional financial support. The ability to simply be there when needed is an extraordinary act of generosity, which is always appreciated.

Love, Love and More Love – Great grandparents offer a rock-solid foundation of love in a child’s life. Children need to know that no matter what might be going on in their lives, or with their own parents, they always have a safe and loving place at grandma and grandpa’s house.

Empathy – hindsight is a terrific thing. Grandparents can learn how to see the world through a child’s eyes again. This is a lovely surprise of being a grandparent – we get to interact with our grandchildren and live life, for a little while, with their sense of time and their capacity for wonder.

A Listening Ear – this is invaluable to the whole family – being there to listen to your grandchildren’s stories and encourage their enthusiasms is a wonderful gift to give. You are also one (loving) step removed, so can be less emotional and more practical when it comes to offering advice.

Guidance and Teaching – all of the qualities above combine to make grandparents fantastic teachers. Children learn a great deal just from being in the same room with you, watching how you prepare a meal, listening to you sing your favourite song. Seeing multiple generations of their family is an important way for children to learn who they are and how to live. It encourages tolerance, understanding and empathy.
