To change your mindset and stave off any feelings of depression, making some solid and constructive plans is a great idea. There is nothing like having a course of action and a goal mapped out to inspire you, and the colder months tend to be less social, so you should have time to put your plans into action.
Plan a good plan
Be specific. Break your plan into manageable steps and put a time limit on it. Here are some examples:
Clean out the garden shed
During the colder months, there are less lawns to be mowed and weeds to be pulled. Put this time to good use and clear out the garden shed.
Set aside a day to remove everything (remember to ask for help if you need help moving awkward objects).
Take an inventory and only put back items that work, are maintained and for which there is a space.
Take the opportunity to refill the petrol can, sharpen the mower blades, sweep the shed clear, and maybe install a couple of extra shelves or hooks to maximise storage.
Learn a language or an instrument
Research classes in your area and how easy they are for you to fit into your schedule. Can you hire an instrument for the first term or so until you have a clearer picture of your interest and ability? Is there a study group that you can join?
Plan your finances or filing system
A grey day is the perfect time for an indoor project like filing. There is little more satisfying than having all your affairs in order and being able to find things easily. Remember not to touch a piece of paper unless you are ready to deal with it completely, and don't be afraid to throw out things you no longer need.
Keep in contact
If a wee bit of winter depression is knocking on your door, how about you invite friends over instead? Plan some afternoon games sessions, soup nights or dinner parties. If your friends and loved ones are a bit far away, it might be time to go on a road trip, or at the vey least dig out your loveliest stationery and write them a long letter.
Change your routine
If you enjoy an early morning walk during the summer, you may have to make weather concessions – change to a mid morning walk with a friend and stop for coffee afterwards and kill two birds with one stone.
Keeping yourself motivated and occupied is easy with a plan – winter needn’t been hibernation – try organisation!
