Pedal yourself healthy
Obviously, cycling is great cardio-vascular exercise, which means good things for the health of your heart and lungs. Increasing your cardio vascular fitness boosts your immunity, potentially adds years to your life and increases your brain function. Research has shown that just a five per cent increase in cardio vascular fitness can increase function in mental tests by as much as 15 per cent.
You will also burn calories more effectively and strengthen nearly all the muscles in your body, which improves posture, bone density and helps to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
Cycling is also a low-impact exercise, so for those with lingering historical injuries, there is a lower risk of re-injury.
Increasing your fitness means that you are also more likely to improve your mood, creativity and personal motivation.
Everyone is welcome
Cyclists are increasingly being catered for in the form of cycle ways and lanes in busy areas. It is a great way to see your town or country and opens up a whole new realm socially.
Bicycles themselves can be incredibly technical, but there is no need to go crazy. For most people, a fairly standard model and comfortable clothing is all you need to get started. Give it a good try before you feel the need to invest too heavily in equipment – you can even hire a bike for a while if you like to get back into the swing of it.
Cycling is an activity that you can easily enjoy with your family, and is a lovely reason to go on an adventure.
Go on – get on your bike –for so many reasons it is good for you, and the planet!
