Halloween may have a reputation for chocolate and sweets, but with a little imagination it can be a healthy holiday. After all, the last thing little ones need is another excuse to guzzle down sugar. So, instead of stocking up on junk food why not experiment with one of these hauntingly healthy (yep we went there) recipes? Basically, you get to enjoy all the treats without the sugar overload.


Pumpkin spice cupcakes

Whoever said cupcakes have to be a guilty pleasure? With this gem of a recipe you can throw together healthy pumpkin spice cupcakes that the kids will love. The cream cheese icing is a definite highlight, and you can include a little less sugar if you want to make them even healthier.


Frankenstein Kiwi Pops

How adorable are these bite sized kiwi pops? Not only do they make eating fruit fun but you can whip up a batch with the grandkids in no time. If you want to get creative you can even experiment with other fruits.

Cinnamon roasted pumpkin seeds

With a hint of sugar and a touch of cinnamon, these crunchy treats will satisfy your sweet tooth and give you a protein hit. The recipe calls for sugar but for a natural twist why not use honey or maple syrup? If you’re carving a jack-o-lantern with the kids this year simply save the seeds, roast them up and enjoy!

Halloween rocky road

While there’s not a marshmallow in sight, this Halloween rocky road recipe is hands down delicious. Plus, as it’s from Deliciously Ella it’s packed full of goodness. If you want a more traditional rocky road you can always sprinkle with a few mini marshmallows and drizzle with dark chocolate.

Healthy pumpkin pie

While pumpkin pie is a bit of a North American tradition, we think Halloween is the perfect excuse to whip one up. We’re loving this recipe from Chocolate Covered Katie, and don’t even get us started on the healthy marshmallow fluff. Who knew you could make meringue from chickpea water? While Katie’s recipe calls for pumpkin puree which is a bit elusive in NZ, you can easily make your own.

If you’re expecting trick or treaters this year why not make a little extra and offer it to the kids? They’re guaranteed to gobble them down, and the parents will be thrilled that there’s something healthy in their bounty.
