We are largely creatures of habit. It is comfortable and we understand it. But left too long, habits can get boring. The same goes for décor. If your home never changes, it can feel outdated or old fashioned.
Next time you have some spare time, choose a room and give it a facelift. It’s a great excuse to de-clutter and doesn’t need to take a lot of time or money.
Furniture
In a sunny spot, arrange a couple of armchairs and make it a dedicated reading area.
Sideboards and hall tables
If you have collections in the same colour (amber glass vases, silverware, Lladro), group them together. Less isn’t necessarily more – sometimes a dozen vases of various sizes and shapes looks a million dollars!
The same goes for pictures on the walls – rotate them – from room to room if you like, or display some photos for a while and then change them out. It looks fantastic to display old family photographs alongside very modern snaps in frames.
Colour
Light and Scent
Lighting candles instantly give a room a lift. Add scented candles and your room will smell special too. You need only burn them for a short time, but the effect is gorgeous.
De-clutter
It is easy to keep a ‘pile’ permanently in the corner of a room – ironing that needs to be done, papers that need to be filed, or a pile of books or magazines looking for a home. Make today the day you move the pile and deal with it. Sometime moving clutter from a room is as noticeable as adding pretty things.
Have some fun
Invite a friend over who has a sense of fun and a good eye and put your heads together. When it comes to home styling, it is fine to try anything – you can always put it back where it was!
