Fun fact: Life discovered in one of the most inhospitable places on Earth

Scientists have made an exciting discovery in Antartica which has implications for our search for life on other planets.

Scientists found bacteria in water samples taken from a deep, sunless lake buried beneath a glacier, a few hundred miles from the South Pole¹. Because of the amount of organic matter detected in the samples, it’s possible there might be other life-forms, like animals, living in the lake.

So what does this mean for life on other planets? It’s believed that some planets (including Mars) have lakes buried underneath ice. Perhaps they might support life, too.
