While dermatologists sing praise about the benefits of water based moisturisers, there’s still definitely something to be said for their oil based counterparts. And when we say “oil” we mean 100% natural, of course. No synthetic emollients or petrochemicals here.
Why we love oil based moisturisers
Natural oils are made up of natural fatty acids which actively repair and strengthen the outer layer of the epidermis, aka your complexion. This is the protective structure that retains moisture in your skin using a lipid rich cement. Cue oil based moisturisers, which contain the very same fatty acids contained in the skin’s natural cement. These babies work hard to repair the microscopic cracks that facilitate moisture loss and essentially dry out your skin and trigger premature ageing. Cracks can also fast-track wrinkles, and no one wants that.
Toning: 101
While oil based moisturisers can work wonders, you do need to be careful about what toner you use. Probably one of the most underrated skincare steps, toning replenishes the skin and restores its pH levels.
But with so many toners out there, how are you supposed to choose the right solution for your skin? Well, it’s surprisingly easy. While alcohol and glycol based toners are popular, the best choice for your skin is always water based.
Here’s why:
Removing excess oil
Why tone? Basically, a toner’s function is to enhance the cleansing process. As well as removing dust, pollution and other impurities that can linger after washing your face, water based toners also eliminate traces of oil. Those who use oil based moisturisers are especially prone to build ups, which makes toning even more important.
Prep the skin for penetration
As well as removing debris like oil and traces of makeup, toners also soothe, repair and smooth the skin’s surface. They minimise the signs of redness and inflammation and help prep the skin for anti-aging treatments and serums. Basically, if you’re spending a small fortune on miracle lotions and potions you may as well ensure that they’re penetrating your skin.
Choosing the right toner
Our advice is to always shun chemicals in favour of water based toners that are enhanced with nothing more than healing ingredients like plant extracts and essential oils.
How to use
Using a toner is so easy and literally only adds a minute or so to your daily beauty regime. It’s as simple as splashing your face with cold water after cleansing, then saturating a cotton pad or two with toner. Simply swathe over you face, neck, and décolletage at night to enhance your cleanse, then again in the morning to remove any oils or sebum that built up during the night.
Can you DIY?
Absolutely! Suitable for all skin types, this green-tea toner is made using little more than a cup of organic green tea, half a teaspoon of honey and three drops of jasmine essential oil. For normal to oily skin try a blend of 1 TBSP apple-cider vinegar toner, the juice of one lemon and 200 ml of distilled water. Of course, both are water based and amazingly simple.
