In May 2015, midlife blogger, Elena, complained about how disappointed she was when she couldn’t find any posts on social media relevant to her as a woman over 50. It was the same across every topic, from mental health to food and fashion. She pointed out how it seemed other groups of bloggers were supportive of each other, leaving her wondering where all the women midlife bloggers were.
She called out for women bloggers to reach out to her, and they did, because almost a year after she wrote that post, she added an update saying she had since met a number of bloggers in their prime who were blogging about various topics from the point of view of older women.
In the past, we have encouraged our readers to start blogs and now, we would like to inspire you even further by exposing you to some of the most stylish bloggers over 50 from around the globe.
Alyson Walsh
This freelance journalist and former magazine fashion editor manages the funny, uplifting, and informed blog about style, That’s Not My Age. She started the blog in 2008 when she noticed the need for an online platform to celebrate men and women of all ages. She is out to prove age has nothing to do with style and you don’t have to be young to be stylish.
You’ll love her witty diary about her fashion-forward life and her weekly beauty and fashion musings. In her own words, her blog is for every woman who refuses to be invisible. She’s so serious about style for older women, she wrote the book Style Forever: The Grown Up Guide to Looking Fabulous. She’s on Instagram at thatsnotmyage.
Beth Djalali
Born in 1958, Beth is a writer and style blogger from San Francisco who blogs at Style at a Certain Age. She grew up in the country in Omaha, Nebraska, which she admits is not exactly the fashion capital of the world. She hopes to inspire other women to embrace their personal style and puts up pictures of her outfits on her blog as often as she can. You can also find her on Instagram at styleatacertainage where she posts pictures of her elegantly put together outfits.
She wants her Outfit of the Day posts to inspire her followers to try something new as she believes dressing up in the morning should be fun. She is a staunch believer anyone can achieve a beautiful closet with affordable pieces that don’t have to be heavy on their pocket.
David Evans
Who said we were leaving the men out of the equation? David Evans is the over-50 male owner of Grey Fox, a blog for over-50s males. A former lawyer, James has no experience in the fashion industry but he has set about turning the industry on its head as he appears in photo shoots here and there. He writes about fashion and menswear style and has a focus on British-made products. Find him on Instagram at greyfoxblog.
Lyn Slater
Before starting her blog, Lyn Slater was a university professor and what started as a blog has now earned her plenty of press and accolades. She started her blog, Accidental Icon, when she found it difficult to find a magazine or fashion blog offering an intellectual, modern, and urban aesthetic that spoke to women like her who were not famous, but were living interesting lives in cities. She has a following of over 700,000 on Instagram at iconaccidental.
This is certainly not an exhaustive list but it’s a good place to start. If you are a fashionista yourself, you might be itching to start a blog of your own after going through these blogs. While it’s okay to start your blog on a free platform, you might have noticed that all of the blogs mentioned above have their own domain names, meaning they paid for a domain name and a proper web hosting plan.
Take your passion with you and start right, and who knows, you might be the next big thing from New Zealand!
