About Three Dogs, Two Murders and a Cat

Cosy mysteries have never been so much fun in this entertaining novel from New Zealand author Rodney Strong.

Nicolette Briggs doesn’t do humans.

As Wellington’s premier, and possibly only, animal detective, Nicolette mostly investigates missing pets and cases of animal cruelty. So when her latest client asks her to investigate a case of a poisoned cat, it seems right up her alley. Until a body shows up, then another, and suddenly despite her resolve to not get involved, Nicolette is right in the middle of two murder investigations.

When someone breaks into her house and one of her dogs is injured, Nicolette’s reluctance to stay involved turns to determination. Not only will she solve this thing before the police, but her critical police detective brother in the process.

Along the way, she has to navigate a daughter about to turn 15, a dwindling bank account, and a dysfunctional family that seems determined to fix her. Not to mention a killer who’s turned their sights her way.

No wonder she doesn’t do humans.

‘Three Dogs, Two Murders and a Cat is the perfect blend of action, mystery, humour, entertaining family dynamics and an unforgettable heroine. Completely unputdownable and unmissable!’ – NZ Booklovers

Author Note

‘One of my favourite TV shows is Gilmore Girls (fun fact, we even named my daughter Lorelei after the main character), so when I sat down to write a new series where the main character has a teenage daughter, I knew I wanted that same fast-paced humorous interactions between mother and daughter.

I’ve always loved animals, so having a main character who provides a voice for them was a really important part of the development process. It also made it fun writing a character that had to force herself to have patience with people because she’d rather be at home with her dogs.’

About the Author

Rodney Strong is a New Zealand author, primarily of cosy mysteries. He has been writing all his life and decided in 2016 to pursue a full-time career in creating worlds. His most popular character is a 98-year-old retired con artist, but he loves all of his characters, even if some of them don’t do as they’re told.

Rodney Strong has always tinkered with different styles of writing. In the early 2000s, he turned to playwriting, his version of Zorro being successfully performed with the Wellington Repertory Theatre in the Wellington Botanical Gardens. Life continued to pull him away from writing, but he always found his way back. Little did he know that his eleven years working in the private sector and eight years in the Government sector would provide him with plenty of material.

In 2016, he enrolled in Whitireia Polytechnic’s Advanced Diploma in Creative Writing, where he spent the year under the watchful eye of award-winning author Mandy Hager, developing his first full-length manuscript. The following year, he self-published Troy’s Possibilities, a time-travel-style romance, before pivoting into the world of cosy mysteries. He has published a total of 17 books and delights in freaking people out by telling them that he essentially kills people for a living but that it was alright because he’d made the people up in the first place.

He lives in Porirua with his family, including two kittens who are still of the age they believe all toes are fair game.
