About A Naturalist’s Guide to the Butterflies & Moths of Aotearoa New Zealand

A Naturalist’s Guide to the Butterflies & Moths of Aotearoa New Zealand is an easy-to-use introductory identification guide to 361 species of butterfly and moth found in Aotearoa New Zealand

High-quality photographs from the author and New Zealand’s top nature photographers are accompanied by detailed species descriptions, which include nomenclature, size, distribution, habits and habitats, and conservation information.

The user-friendly introduction covers geography, habitats, moth and butterfly identification, survey methods and a glossary. The final section contains an all-important checklist of all of the Lepidoptera of New Zealand.

This is the third title in the NZ collection, following A Naturalist’s Guide to the Birds of NZ by Oscar Thomas and A Naturalist’s Guide to the Reptiles & Amphibians of NZ by Samuel Purdie.

This is the perfect pocket guide for first-time naturalists, and 162 species of the 361 are endemic to Aotearoa New Zealand.

“This richly illustrated and informative book is a must-have for all naturalists with an interest in Aotearoa New Zealand’s extraordinary endemic Lepidoptera. Highly recommended.” – Dr Robert Hoare, Senior Entomologist, Manaaki Whenua—Landcare Research

Author Note

“In preparation for this field guide, I compiled photographs from over 200 late nights surveying for Lepidoptera across Aotearoa/New Zealand. This ongoing commitment to sleep deprivation resulted in over 10,000 observations of 700 species! I upload all of my moth and butterfly observations to the website/app iNaturalist so that they are available to other lepidopterists, both now and into the future. This never feels like work, and these observations (and the thousands of accompanying photographs) were merely collected ‘along the way’ whilst I was following my immense thirst for exploration of the natural world.”

About the Author

Carey Knox is an independent ecologist, researcher, and wildlife photographer based in Ranfurly, Central Otago, New Zealand. He has an MSc, PgDip, and BSc from the University of Otago in the fields of Zoology and Ecology and is currently completing a PhD. Carey specialises in lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) and herpetology (lizards) and is passionate about their conservation.

For more than 15 years, he has followed this passion (and a thirst for adventure) across the many remote mountains and valleys of Aotearoa. With camera in tow, he has documented and discovered numerous new populations of threatened fauna. His extensive fieldwork in high alpine habitats has even resulted in the discovery of two lizard species new to science.

In 2012, Carey was awarded the Don Merton Conservation Pioneer Award for his extensive work on jewelled geckos (Naultinus gemmeus). This award recognises a young person who has demonstrated potential as a leader in the management of native wildlife. Today, Carey works closely with the New Zealand Department of Conservation and numerous other conservation groups providing advice on lizards and lepidoptera.

Carey uses his photography to showcase the natural beauty and uniqueness of New Zealand’s wildlife to the world. His photographs have been utilised in numerous publications, websites, magazines, and books and he has won several awards for his photography including the fauna category of the Tūhura Otago Museum Photography Competition.
