About The Terrible Trio | The Mystery of the Lost Cape
The Terrible Trio is a graphic novel series, best described as The Bad Guys meets Madagascar! Already an international success, with rights sold to publishers in 20 countries!
Barry finds a lost cape that gives him the power to fly and secretly enjoys a day as a flying lemur. He becomes hooked on being a hero, saving lives and basking in the fame of being a mysterious masked crusader. When the cape’s emu owner and a reward-hungry Zeb close in, a struggle over the cape causes it to rip and lose its magic. In big trouble, the Terrible Trio must convince the emu that a true superhero does not need a cape.
Come join Swapna Haddow’s funny and lovable characters—melodramatic Zeb, peacemaker Barry and morose Marge—in this new, action-packed, warm-hearted adventure. Hilariously illustrated by the gifted Minky Stapleton, whose wacky sense of humour really brings these characters to goofy life.
This is another super-sized serving of slapstick comedy and heartfelt friendship.
The Terrible Trio Book One was the winner of the NZ Booklovers Best Cover Award 2026!

About the Authors
Swapna Haddow grew up in the UK and wrote her first book at age eight. She wishes she’d kept it, but it seemed like a good idea at the time to trade it for two stickers and a couple of marbles! Her first published book was the hilarious junior novel Dave Pigeon, which grew into a laugh-out-loud, award-winning series. She has since written many funny, colourful and much-loved picture books as well as further junior fiction series. Swapna loves to write stories filled with boisterous animals causing mayhem, with friendship and humour consistently at the heart of her work. Swapna now lives in Dunedin with her husband, son, and their dog.
Minky Stapleton is a multi-faceted illustrator with a range of styles, all with a dash of humour. An award-winning Art Director and Creative Director originally from Johannesburg, Minky gave up advertising to follow her first love, illustration. She now resides in Auckland, where she balances illustration projects with running classes for kids on how to design scary monsters. Minky has illustrated many titles for Scholastic, from hilarious picture books to historical fiction and high-energy, heavily illustrated junior fiction.
