About Safekeeping

Fast-paced family law drama set in Ōtautahi Christchurch from local author

Karen Zelas takes a unique angle on crime fiction by writing from the perspective of a Lawyer for Child.

Fast-paced and compelling, this contemporary legal drama set in Ōtautahi Christchurch, follows child advocacy lawyer Rebecca Eaton as she navigates her work representing a surrogate mother and advising on a child endangerment case, as well as facing trials in her own life. Professional and personal lines blur as she strives to protect the people she loves and those who have put their trust in her.

A story of womanhood and family, Rebecca wrestles with her responsibility to New Zealand’s tamariki. This page-turner leaves us asking, ‘Who does the law really protect?’

Safekeeping is a standalone follow-up to Karen Zelas’ previous novel, Resolutions.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Wellington-born and raised, Karen Zelas graduated from Otago Medical School in 1964, determined to practice Child and Family Psychiatry. At this time there was little formal psychiatry training in New Zealand so she travelled to England with her young family to complete specialist post-graduate training. She returned to Christchurch in the 1970s to a consultant position as the sole child psychiatrist in the area at the time.

As legal services for children and families developed, she became known as an expert witness in the Family Court system, and contributed to the training of lawyers who chose to act as, what was then known as, Counsel for Child, now Lawyer for Child. Karen practiced psychiatry until 2006 when she decided to follow her other passion: writing.

Along with writing fiction, Karen is also a successful playwright and founder of a small not-for-profit independent publishing house which is currently celebrating its 10-year anniversary. The rich variety of her experiences has become a pool of inspiration to write about Rebecca Eaton, a young Lawyer for Child, based in Christchurch, set against the Aotearoa New Zealand justice system. Safekeeping, and its predecessor Resolutions, have been works of love and ambition, bringing together both her experience as a writer and with lawyers in the court system. She uses this medium and the crime genre to portray the needs of vulnerable Kiwi children and families – to draw them into the political limelight and to make readers notice.
