Many people feel the urge to grow their own food, yet don’t know where to start. Gone are the days where this life skill is passed down through the generations, leaving the keen gardener to find their own way through a minefield of information overload, not all of it trustworthy.
Growing Vegetables has been created to guide and encourage the novice gardener, week by week, through their first year of growing vegetables. Written by well-known gardening personality Sarah O’Neil AKA ‘Sarah the Gardener’, the book takes growing food back to basics.
“Today more and more people are looking to edible gardening, to ease stretched budgets, teach their kids where food comes from, lower their food miles and know exactly what they are eating, or just as a simple hobby to distract from the stresses of the world,” says Sarah. “However, there is an overabundance of information and advice around growing food, but it can be conflicting, unnecessarily complicated and sometimes not even true.”
Sarah wrote Growing Vegetables in an easy-to-understand format that takes the gardener through an entire year week-by-week, showing not only when to do tasks, but how and more importantly why. It covers the foundational methods and techniques that make up the basics of gardening.
Packed with tips and techniques, planning charts and places to record notes, it’s a handy resource of trusted, reliable gardening information.
The book is aimed at supporting new gardeners through their first growing season with solid foundational skills and information, building their confidence. They can then independently take their gardening journey off in whatever direction that suits them, developing a lifelong love of gardening and growing food. It also serves as a handy resource and reference guide for any level of gardener to refresh the basic gardening advice and troubleshoot their vege patch.
Growing Vegetables is a 10th anniversary re-release of a book originally published in 2016, and has been completely revised and updated.
“Helping people to grow their own food has never been more prevalent, even more so than 10 years ago. I am still just as passionate about sharing the love of growing food and strongly believe it is a life skill – up there with boiling an egg or sewing on a button that people should know how to do. As a lost life skill without the collective wisdom of generations, learning by doing can often result in failure and giving up before really finding their feet. I want to help others find a clear, simple and honest entry into growing food that will set them on the path to a lifelong love of gardening.”
Sarah O’Neil is known as Sarah the Gardner. She’s a professional garden writer, passionate gardener and an empty nester still growing far too much food. Sarah gardens on 10-acres on the wild west coast, just south of Auckland where her family relocated a house and established a thriving garden on bare sandy soil.
